Young Bull Terriers show at Jongehondendag N.B.C September, Holland 2009

THANKS go to Jan and Ria van der Heide (Castle-Tree) for their kindness and hospitality towards me during my recent stay in the Netherlands. I really appreciate the time I spent in their lovely home along with all the information on the must see places for tourists – the water mills in Kindersweik were really something special.
I was honoured and delighted to get the invitation to be one of the three judges at Jongehondendag NBTC 2009 in Asperen. The show was very well organised, so my compliments go to the people behind the show. As show manager of many dog shows, I know how complicated it can be to organise such a show, the many things there are to do and how easily things can go wrong. But not here – the show was on track from the start to the end.
The quality of the young Bull Terriers was generally very high. The best of them could be successful competing in show rings worldwide. Belgium was also represented by good animals and several of the young dogs appealing most to me were, in fact, as a result of a mating with Dutch and Belgian parents – kennel Bigshot and kennel Superbowls.
Mostly I saw good temperaments, good bones and angulations. If I should point out something that it is worth breeders paying attention to is quite a lot of the dogs presented had long backs and the inside canines were not placed correctly.
Some of the dogs are still in my memory. This Is Love of Pretty Pinks, who wasn’t yet four months old, was absolutely breathtaking. I couldn’t take my eyes from her: white beauty girl with head marks – an unbelievable head with a super turned down face, long foreface ends up in a beautiful Roman finish, totally filled under the eyes, plenty of underjaw, correct mouth for the age, lovely wicked expression in her small triangular dark eyes, a long neck, well laid back shoulders, lovely topline, good deep forechest, good spring of ribs, excellent angulations, plenty of bones and substance and a super showgirl. I gave her the maximum number of points in her class – five points – and so did the two other judges. At the end of the day, when all class winners should be placed, without hesitation I gave her again the maximum five points. The two other judges gave her four points each and gave their five points to two different dogs. That means ‘my girl’ ended with the highest number of points and was the best young Bull Terrier of the show. What a great pleasure for me.
I would also like to mention three other dogs from the show. In the nine to ten months dog class, Bigshot Cracker Barrel immediately caught my eye the moment he entered the ring: lovely strong built masculine white dog with a classical, totally egg-shaped head, ears bang on top, seen from the front the most fantastic expression owing to his very small, perfect, high placed triangular dark eyes, a gun barrel front, deep wide forechest, cat feet, lovely neck, good strong short back, well angulated. Not the best in movement going but OK coming. Good bones and substance all over, perfect mouth with big white teeth, for me the type I expect could become a dominant stud dog. I gave him the maximum five points and he ended up second best in his class.
In the nine to ten months bitch class, Bigshot Eye Candy also caught my attention as soon as she entered the ring: a medium sized, middle-of-the-road type white bitch with head marks, another quality white with lovely filled and turned egg shaped head, lovely expression, small dark eyes, perfect moth ears bang on the top, straight good front, lots of bones and substance and perfect mouth, lovely proportions and very professionally presented. She won her class and she and her handler became the best show team of the day.
There were also other dogs worth a mention such as some of the Belgian dogs from Irene Collier, Superbowl and Heike Knockaert. Yoeckydoes was, indeed, very promising but was not on the day quite ready to beat my winners.
